Features constantly being taken away
Published on December 5, 2005 By WebGizmos In IconDeveloper
I generally don't complain about stuff here, but IconDeveloper seems to be going down the tubes lately.

Why is it that every time there is a new version of IconDeveloper there are features being removed or disabled? I used to be able to save icons to png format without having to go rename them every time before saving the next one, but not anymore. Now...I can't save icons at 128x128 size. The "new versions" seem to be going backwards instead of forwards as far as features are concerned.

So whats the reason for not being able to save 128x128 now?

So, I assume it is a hard limitation (bug?) in Icon Developer, and no fix is forthcoming, and I'm not the only one in this situation.

So I guess I've answered my own question. Thanks, me!

I did write a Forum post 2 weeks ago about Icon Developer not working properly and it has not been updated sing august 2006. Milksama from Stardock did reply and said they tried to reproduce the problem with recoloring icons and got same result. ' Out of memory' message. It seems to me its the IP's that have included 256 size are the IP's that can't be recolored. Milksama had passed along the problem to Stardocks Developers.
I'm sure they will have an update as soon as possible.

I'll probably start doing more icon work so I got this back out and tried to use it...what a joke.sad thing is,I cant find anything else that will batch recolor an icon library.

This is the first time I have seen Stardock not support a paid version of their software.
Not supporting free stuff is understandable...this wasnt free.

If you recall, I.R., ID & SKS share code - I'd expect neither will be ready until the other is ready, if you know what I mean.

For me, it's moot. My subscription has lapsed. WindowBlinds is doing it's thing, and will continue to do so until, well, until it breaks, I guess... even then, it's not the kind of thing that's crucial to my computer use (and some apps just don't like WindowBlinds at all, which is unfortunate...)

SkinStudio Professional needs to be redesigned from the ground up w.r.t. usability... Trying to figure out whether to use PNG or TGA and what all the different little bits of each multi-part icon are... it's reverse engineering half the time, rather than creating.

IconDeveloper doesn't support Vista icons I need... and won't for months, it seems.

Those three products are all I'm really interested in w.r.t. ObjectDesktop, and they're idling. I know software license models are changing from the pay-once-use-it-forever model (Web 2.0 is ad supported, mostly, I guess) but I expect the apps in a subscription-based fee to be updated more regularly than once every year, given that I only use 3 of the apps. $40 for another year subscription with no guarantee of updates... well, I've paid for two years and I think I'm good for now. I'll check StarDock's apps in early 2008 and maybe resubscribe, if they'll have me

I'll admit SKS needs a little work but it's far from having to reverse engineer. Also.. it ALWAYS uses .tga or bmp.

Its great to see new updates finally coming out of SDC for IconDeveloper...I just hope its working better and some of the old options have been put back in. I used to...but not for at least a year or more now... use it for converting single icons from iconpackages for use in OD+ and it would save the same name...then it was messed up and you had to go rename each png image before doing anymore or it would just keep overwriting everything. When that happened I had to started using AveIcon for that...which did it even faster and saved the png name.

I'm very pleased that IconDeveloper has been updated to properly support Vista! Personally, I think Stardock is doing a great job with the various products, and I'm really glad I renewed my subscription! I'm very excited about the upcoming improvements, too!
